8 Reasons Why I Love Being an Occupational Therapist*
This year, Occupational Therapy in Australia celebrates its 80th anniversary, marking eight decades of dedication, evolution, and impact. The journey began with the formation of the first Occupational Therapists Club in 1944. Since then, the profession has grown significantly, adapting to societal changes and the needs of individuals across various settings.
From the early days of OT as a predominantly hospital-based role to the diverse, holistic field it is today, Australian OTs have made remarkable contributions. We’ve seen advancements in mental health, pediatric care, rehabilitation, and community support. The focus on evidence-based practice, client-centered care, and interdisciplinary collaboration has only strengthened over the years, making occupational therapy one of the most dynamic professions in healthcare. Also – we have travelled worldwide and in my experience there will be an Australian somewhere!!
As we celebrate “80 Years of Connection” during OT Week 2024, we reflect on our collective achievements and the connections that have defined our profession. These connections extend beyond our patients to our colleagues, communities, and the broader health landscape. Occupational Therapy isn’t just about the individual; it’s about working together to foster environments that allow people to participate fully in life.
*I have chosen 8 reasons because doing 80 reasons for 80 years seemed wayyyyyyy to hard and would be too long to read!
8 Reasons Why I Love Being an Occupational Therapist
When people ask what I do for a living, I proudly tell them that I’m an Occupational Therapist. Sometimes I get a confused look, followed by, “So… you help people find jobs?” While occupational therapy can involve vocational support, it’s so much more than that.
Let me share 8 reasons why I absolutely love being an OT and why it’s been my calling and a huge part of my personal identity!
1. Flexibility in All the Best Ways
One of the greatest things about OT is how adaptable it is. Every day is different, and the range of settings we work in is enormous. Whether it’s helping a child develop fine motor skills or supporting an older adult with mobility and daily tasks, we can mold our practice to fit the needs of the client, wherever they are in life. No two days are the same!
2. It’s So Much Fun
Who wouldn’t love a job where bubbles and toys are part of your toolkit? Pediatric OT is all about finding joy in the little things, and I get to spend my days laughing and playing with kids while helping them grow. Yes, it’s hard work, but it’s also incredibly rewarding, especially when you see the difference that play-based therapy can make.
3. Creating Positive Change
At the heart of occupational therapy is the goal of enabling people to participate in everyday activities. We focus on making a real, tangible impact in people’s lives, whether that’s helping someone regain independence after an injury or teaching a child the skills they need to thrive in school. It’s meaningful work, and knowing you’ve made a difference is a feeling like no other.
4. Being Invited into People’s Lives
As an OT, you get to be a part of someone’s story in such a special way. It’s an honor to be trusted by families and individuals during their most vulnerable moments. You’re not just treating symptoms, you’re part of their journey towards better health and independence, and that’s something incredibly humbling.
I love being invited into peoples and families lives, and being a part of their story as well as learning their story.
5. Toys, Play, and Bubbles!
Especially in pediatric OT, play is the cornerstone of what we do. From using toys for sensory integration to blowing bubbles to encourage breathing exercises, it’s a world filled with fun and imagination. Seeing the joy on a child’s face when they achieve a new skill through play? That’s priceless.
6. Innovation and Creativity
One of the best parts of being an OT is that we’re constantly problem-solving and thinking outside the box. We’re inventors and innovators. Need a tool that doesn’t exist? We’ll figure out a way to make it. Across the lifespan, OTs are known for coming up with ingenious solutions that help people overcome obstacles. It’s never boring, that’s for sure!
7. The OT Community & Multidisciplinary Collaboration
The OT world is like one big supportive family. Whether it’s sharing ideas with fellow OTs or working alongside teachers, psychologists, speechies, and other professionals, there’s a sense of teamwork and camaraderie that makes it all so fulfilling. In pediatrics, especially, I’m constantly collaborating with a village of professionals, all united to support each child holistically. The parents, grandparents, teachers’ aides, and everyone involved become part of the process, and it’s such a rewarding team effort.
8. 80 Years of OT History in Australia
I love knowing that I’m part of a long tradition of helping others. In Australia, OT has an 80-year history of growth, learning, and innovation. From its beginnings to the modern-day, OTs have been pushing boundaries and finding new ways to help people lead fulfilling lives. In short, I can’t imagine doing anything else. Occupational Therapy is where passion meets purpose, and I’m grateful every day for the opportunity to help others live their best lives.
Reflections for OT Week 2024: Celebrating Connection and Progress
As we honor 80 years of OT in Australia, it’s a moment for all of us to reflect on the evolution of our profession and the impact we’ve made. Here are some reflections to celebrate OT Week 2024:
- Reflecting on the Evolution of Occupational Therapy:
One of the most significant advancements that has shaped my journey in OT is the integration of sensory-based interventions into pediatric care. When I first started, the understanding of sensory processing challenges was still growing. Now, sensory integration is a vital part of how we help children with autism, ADHD, and other neurodivergent needs navigate the world around them. It’s been amazing to see this shift and know that we are helping kids thrive in ways that were once unimaginable. Working alongside Tim as he completed his Phd In Sensory Reactivity, as well as starting this week my next STAR Centre course, this is a space where I am continually learning and growing! - What Makes Me Most Proud to Be an OT:
I’m proud of the creativity and adaptability that define OT. Whether I’m using play and toys with kids or creating inventive solutions for adults to regain independence, I love how OT empowers people to live their best lives. This profession allows me to be both a problem-solver and a compassionate partner in someone’s journey. Seeing those little (and big) victories, whether it’s a child writing their name for the first time or an adult regaining confidence after an injury, makes me incredibly proud to be part of such a meaningful profession. - A Transformative Story:
I tried to think of one specific one, however there are two many and I think choosing one would be a disservice to all the families and children who work hard on their therapy journeys every day. One story I can share is my own – and I love how each day I am learning about people, children, our profession, and the world. I am continually challenged and growing, learning and adjusting to what I need to thrive in my profession.
As we celebrate OT Week, let’s take a moment to recognize the incredible work OTs do around the world and reflect on the ways we’ve grown as a profession. Here’s to 80 more years of connection, innovation, and positive change!
Happy OT Week 2024! 🎉
